Get up and Stand up for your Health

Are you sitting down to read this? If so, you may be engaging in one of the major health problems of the 21st century! Sitting, as it turns out, burns little in the way of calories, and may well be the cause of the obesity ‘epidemic’ that we are struggling with in Australia at the moment.

Our jobs and our leisure time are often spent sitting – much different than previous generations where work meant anything but sitting around. Time spent sitting in front of a computer screen, sitting in a car, sitting in front of the TV, is all time that is not spent being physically active. And that, apparently, is a problem for our waistlines.

Recent data shows that people who spend large amounts of time sitting at work are more likely to be overweight or obese than those whose occupations are less spent in a chair.

Results show that people who normally spent 2 ½ to 6 hours a day sitting at work were 48% more likely to be overweight or obese than those whose job had them sitting for less than 2 ½ hours. For those who sat for even longer periods the results were even more notable. People who regularly spent more than 6 hours a day sitting at work were almost 70% more likely to be overweight and obese than there less desk bound counterparts!

The message is clear. The chair is one of the occupational hazards that we must try to avoid! Get up out of that chair and move around on a regular basis and you will feel better and may well lose some weight along the way.

It is not difficult to do today with the evolution of the stand up desk and many companies providing health and wellness programs to participate in.
